Ask any captain they’ll tell you that the crew can either make you look like an idiot or make you look real good. Given the crew I’ve got on Dolphin Explorer I’m surprised I’m not much better looking than I am ! They are an awesome bunch of people, passionate about what they do and smarter than your average bears, so to speak.
Time to introduce the team, starting with my good friend and long term First Mate - Captain Robert Boss. Rob has been with us for about 8 years now and has worked as a Captain in the Bay of Islands and as crew on a Superyacht in the Pacific Islands. Holding a Bachelors Degree in Marine Biology from Liverpool University coupled with his experience working with the animals … he knows his stuff! Pretty smart bear …. If you are on the boat and Rob is the Captain you can rest assured you are in good hands.
Moving downstairs now we have the most important members of the crew, Sarah-Lyn and Cat. Responsible for looking after the passengers throughout the trip, these girls work hard to ensure our guests are well catered for. Both have worked as marine researchers for Massey University on board Dolphin Explorer for several years before joining us as crew. Sarah-Lyn has a BSc majoring in Marine Biology, and Ecology and Biodiversity from Victoria University in NZ. Cat has a BSc in Zoology from Leeds University (UK) and a MSc in Marine Environmental Management from York University (UK). More very smart bears! They also make a mean cup of coffee!
We also have a couple of part time crew, Hannah and Libby. Both are biologists in the making and learning all the time. Like all of the crew these girls are passionate about protecting marine environments, and teaching people about the importance of these environments, essential for the continued existence of humans on this planet.
So that’s the boat crew. However the boat cannot operate without the shore based team. Next time will be about them.
Have had the last two days off with some high winds and rough seas, but the wind has dropped and the sea is calling! Time to go hunting!
